Vanda Pharmaceuticals Inc. is a biopharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of clinical-stage product candidates for central nervous system disorders. Vanda’s CEO, Mihael Polymeropoulos, MD, founded the company in 2003.

 

Previously, Dr. Polymeropoulos founded and ran the Novartis global Pharmacogenetics department, one of the industry leaders. Prior to that he worked for many years at the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Human Genome Research Institute, where he did pioneering work in gene mapping. He founded Vanda in partnership with Care Capital LLC, the prominent biopharmaceuticals-focused investment firm, and Bio*One Capital, an investment arm of the Singapore government with a focus on new biomedical enterprises.

 

Vanda possesses several compounds that may offer meaningful benefits to patients, clinicians, and payors.
 

Iloperidone (late phase III)
Iloperidone is a 5HT2/D2 antagonist (“atypical”) antipsychotic under development for the treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorders and other psychiatric conditions. Vanda licensed iloperidone in 2004 from Novartis Pharma AG. Vanda is completing the phase III program.
 

VEC-162 (phase II/III)
VEC-162 is a melatonin agonist under development for the treatment of sleep disorders (insomnia, circadian rhythm sleep disorders) and mood disorders (including depression). Vanda licensed VEC-162 from Bristol-Myers Squibb Company in 2004. Vanda has completed phase II for VEC-162 in insomnia and has initiated a phase III trial.
In addition to these compounds, Vanda has acquired and/or is evaluating other candidates for clinical development.
 

VSF-173
VSF-173 is a compound of unknown mechanism of action, that appears promising for excessive sleepiness associated with sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and shift worker sleep disorder. Vanda licensed VSF-173 from Novartis Pharma AG. The compound is ready for Phase II trials.
