Networking Through A Career Change

An article written by PRN founder Michael McLaughlin, MD, along with James Mangraviti, Jr, Esq., and Steven Babitsky, Esq., was recently published by Unique Opportunities magazine in the Summer 2009 issue.

Here is an excerpt from the article:

“Decision points typically follow a linear sequence throughout a doctor’s career: medical school . . . specialty . . . residency . . . fellowship . . . job. What happens when a doctor decides to step off of that track to enter a new type of career, where possibilities are endless and rules are nonexistent?

‘Physicians are used to linear career paths, formalized educational programs, and textbooks.  Our careers typically progress through a predictable series of decision points, each complete with a road map for the next several years and a bibliography of recommended reading.  Stepping out of a clinical career path can open up an endless set of options with no road map – a seemingly daunting proposition for the physician mindset.’

Networking is a foreign concept for many doctors but a crucial component of any career change. Whether using a proactive systematic approach or just keeping an eye open for opportunities presenting themselves, doctors changing careers should be prepared to network.”
