I am an Internist who after 25plus years in practice and watching computerized medical records make my job extend beyond just being a clinician I wanted a change. There was a part of me that loved the security of doing something that I felt confident in doing with all my experience, yet I had always felt Internal Medicine was too demanding of my time, with the demands of keeping up with the latest changes in disease management, going to nursing homes, the hospital and the office.
Yet, I was not sure what I wanted to do. I knew I liked creative endeavors, and I loved to write and give speeches, because I had taken this up as a hobby. Could I make money utilizing these skills that I felt passionate about? After attending a course on Non Clinical Careers for Physicians, given by SEAK, in August 2006, I identified a career, Medical Communications, which utilized my 25 years of development as an Internist and would allow me to speak and write and utilize some of my creativity.
Getting the wheels going to pursue this new career has been slow. I have discovered that you really have to clear your calendar in order to have enough time to continue in your present career and pursue a different career. It is alot of hard work, reading and networking. At this point I have a new resume, but I need to do some publishing to make it more impressive. Once I get a few articles published then I will start circulating my new resume and see what happens. I hope to have my new jab by next September, which will be a year since I began my journey to a new career.
